Heat pump water heaters

A heat pump water heater is a tank with a small heat pump on top. Instead of generating heat directly, it pulls warmth from the surrounding air and transfers it into the tank — using about a third of the electricity of a conventional electric heater.

They're the most efficient way to heat water in a home, qualify for the deepest rebates, and as a bonus, gently dehumidify and cool the room they're installed in.

How it works

    A fan pulls warm air from the surrounding room into the heat pump.

    The refrigerant cycle concentrates that heat to a much higher temperature.

    A heat exchanger transfers that energy into the water in the tank.

Affordable & reliable

Electric tank water heaters

A standard electric tank uses a resistance heating element submerged in the tank to heat water directly. It's the simplest, most affordable way to remove gas — and the easiest install.

They're not as efficient as a heat pump, but they fit anywhere, work in any closet or mechanical room, and have the lowest up-front cost.

How it works

  1. 1

    Cold water enters the tank from the bottom.

  2. 2

    Two heating elements (upper and lower) heat the water inside the tank.

  3. 3

    A thermostat maintains the set temperature, cycling the elements on and off.

    Hot water exits from the top of the tank when a tap is opened.

Sunamp Thermino heat batteries are a modern replacement for hot water tanks — up to four times smaller than the equivalent tank, with no annual maintenance and a sleek design that fits in a closet, under stairs, or anywhere a tank wouldn't.

Instead of storing hot water, a Thermino stores heat in a patented phase-change material called Plentigrade P58. When you turn on a tap, cold water from your supply flows through a heat exchanger inside the unit and comes out at shower temperature on demand.

What's a phase-change material?

When Sunamp's Plentigrade P58 melts and re-solidifies at 58°C, it absorbs and releases huge amounts of latent heat — storing up to 4× more energy per litre than water. The same idea as a hand-warmer, scaled up into a thermal battery.
