Why Sunamp makes sense for Ottawa homes

Ottawa winters, older housing stock, time-of-use hydro rates, and the steady rollout of cold-climate heat pumps — Sunamp Thermino lines up neatly with all of them.

Fits older Ottawa homes

Mechanical rooms in century homes and condos rarely have space for a full-size tank. Thermino slots into a closet, under stairs, or where a tank wouldn't go.

Soaks up off-peak rates

Schedule charging during overnight or shoulder hours on Hydro Ottawa time-of-use rates. You pay less per kWh and store the heat for morning showers.

Pairs with cold-climate heat pumps

A Thermino i acts as the heat-pump-friendly storage tank — letting your heat pump heat both the house and your water from one efficient system.

Plays nicely with solar PV

Capture daytime solar generation as stored hot water — a free way to bank energy you would have exported to the grid for less.

Instant, fresh, mains-pressure hot water

No standing hot water means no Legionella risk. Hot water is heated as it leaves the unit, at the pressure your home already runs.

Zero gas. Zero combustion.

Drop your gas hookup, eliminate carbon monoxide risk, and clear another step off your electrification path.

The science

How a thermal battery beats a hot water tank

Sunamp's patented Plentigrade P58 is a phase-change material — a salt-based gel that melts and re-solidifies at 58°C (136°F). As it changes phase, it absorbs and releases massive amounts of latent heat.

That means a Thermino stores up to four times more energy per litre than water. Cold water from your supply runs through a high-power heat exchanger inside the unit and comes out at shower temperature — fresh, on demand, and at full pressure.

No tank of standing hot water. Lower heat losses. No annual T&P safety valve to maintain. Same idea as a hand-warmer, scaled up into a household appliance.

Inside the unit

  1. 1

A heat source charges the unit

Electric resistance, a boiler, a heat pump, or solar PV — whichever you have — heats the internal Plentigrade P58 above its 58°C phase-change point.

  2. 2

The P58 melts and stores energy

As the material melts, it absorbs huge amounts of latent heat. The energy is stored in the phase change itself, not in raw temperature.

  3. 3

A heat exchanger delivers hot water

Cold water from your supply flows through a high-power heat exchanger embedded in the P58. It exits hot, on demand, at full pressure.

  4. 4

    P58 re-solidifies, ready to recharge

As it releases heat, the material freezes back into a solid. The cycle repeats — verified to 10,000+ cycles with zero noticeable degradation.

Three models, twelve sizes

Thermino comes in three model families, each offered in 20, 40, 60, and 80 sizes. Pick the family that matches your heat source — we'll size it from there.

How to pick a size

Sunamp sizes are labelled by the equivalent hot water tank they replace. Most Ottawa households land on a 40 or 60.

SizeEquivalent tankHot water at 104°F (V10)Recommended flowHousehold
2019 gal22–28 gal1.5 gpm1–2 people, single bath
4037–49 gal49–52 gal4 gpm2–3 people, single bath
6056 gal79 gal5.5 gpm3–4 people, family bath
8075–81 gal98–115 gal7 gpm5+ people, multiple baths

V10 = volume of hot water available at 104°F. Connected load: 2,800 W on all sizes.

Built to last 50+ years

Sunamp is the only heat-battery manufacturer in the world to be awarded A-Grade RAL Certification — the global quality benchmark for phase-change products.

That award independently confirms zero noticeable degradation through 10,000 cycles — equivalent to over 13 years of daily hot-water use. Sunamp's own testing has confirmed failsafe performance to over 40,000 cycles, comparable to 50+ years of continuous use.

And it's backed by a market-leading 10-year warranty on the heating element and storage core.

Sustainability

Net zero, by design

Sunamp's Plentigrade P58 is non-toxic, non-flammable, and fully recyclable at end of life. Every component can be re-used or recycled.

Their factory and offices are heated and powered by carbon-free wind electricity. They've signed up to the SME Climate Hub commitment to halve greenhouse gases by 2030 and reach net zero before 2050 — and their per-product emissions intensity is already approximately zero.

Common questions

Is Sunamp Thermino available in Ottawa?+

Yes — we are certified Sunamp installers serving Ottawa and surrounding areas including Kanata, Nepean, Barrhaven, Orléans, Manotick, and Kemptville. We size, supply, and install Thermino units directly.

How long does a Thermino last?+

Sunamp's Plentigrade P58 is independently RAL-certified to 10,000 cycles with no noticeable degradation — about 13 years of daily use. Sunamp's internal testing has confirmed failsafe performance to over 40,000 cycles, equivalent to 50+ years of continuous use. The heating element and storage core are covered by a 10-year warranty.

Does Thermino need annual maintenance like a hot water tank?+

No mandatory annual maintenance — that is one of its advantages. There's no temperature and pressure (T&P) safety valve to test, no anode rod to swap out, and no scheduled service interval required.

Will I run out of hot water?+

A Thermino delivers fresh, mains-pressure hot water on demand — at flow rates from 1.5 gpm (20 size) up to 7 gpm (80 size). We size the unit to your household's peak demand. The 60 and 80 sizes deliver hot water at the same flow rates as a conventional large tank.

Can a Thermino work with my heat pump?+

Yes — Thermino i is specifically designed to work with selected heat pumps as the indirect heat source. We can confirm compatibility with your specific model during the consult.

How does it pair with solar PV or off-peak rates?+

You can schedule charging windows to align with low-cost or zero-cost energy: daytime when your solar panels are producing, or overnight on Ontario time-of-use rates. The stored heat is then available at any time, decoupled from when it was produced.

What about CO and gas safety?+

A Thermino has no combustion. No pilot light, no gas line, no flue, and no carbon monoxide risk. The Plentigrade P58 itself is non-toxic and non-flammable.

How big is it physically?+

Roughly 22.5″ deep × 14.5″ wide, with height depending on size: 17.5″ (20), 25.5″ (40), 34.5″ (60), 41.5″ (80). Up to four times smaller than the hot water tank it replaces.
